Original language description
Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are a family of clonal hematopoietic stem cell malignancies characterized by ineffective hematopoiesis, peripheral cytopenias, frequent karyotypic abnormalities, and risk of transformation to acute myeloid leukemia (AML) Thus, MDS are mainly a disease of the elderly with a sharp increase in incidence in the age decade above 70 years. The concept of personalized or precision medicine was introduced in the State of the Union speech given by U.S. President Barack Obama in 2015. He announced the precision medicine initiatives that would enable development of individualized patient care in order to improve patient outcomes.
