Levels of 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 10 in CSF are not a valuable biomarker for multiple sclerosis
Original language description
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common neurological disorder affecting the CNS. Although the causes of MS are unknown, it is believed to occur as a result of genetic and environmental factors and damage of CNS can be caused, at least at part, by attacks of the body's own immune system. Current studies indicate that both the adaptive immune system and the innate immune system are involved. The pathology of MS is characterized by multifocal lesions also called plaques, by neuroinflammation, and by the destruction of myelin sheaths of neurons. However, links among neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative components of the disease are still a matter of debate.
