The effect of atypical antipsychotics on the steroidome of men with schizophrenia

  • Original language description

The aim of this study was to compare the effect of three atypical antipsychotics on the human steroidome, as changes in the steroidome may be related to a number of complications of these drugs. Clozapine is a therapeutically very effective atypical antipsychotic for the treatment of resistant schizophrenia. It blocks serotonin 5 HT2A/5-HT2C receptors and dopamine D1-4 receptors, with the highest affinity for the dopamine D4 receptor. However, Clozapine is not a first-choice drug due to a number of side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness and seizures, sweating, headache, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, and Clozapine treatment can also lead to changes in blood counts. Olanzapine is also an atypical antipsychotic that acts antagonistically on dopamine D2 receptors and serotonin receptors. It also has a number of side effects, but their intensity and risk are weaker. A third studied atypical antipsychotic, Risperidone, is also used to treat schizophrenia and also has a number of side effects including a drop in white blood cell count, risk of angina and even heart failure.
