Nurses´ Expectations in Connection with the Entry of the Czech Republic into the European Union

Entry of the Czech Republic into the European Union is connected with various expectations. It is true also for nurses. In our survey we investigated which fundamental changes in the character of their work the nurses expect. They suppose that the changes will apply especially to higher demands concerning their lifelong education (73.3 % of respondents) and to better opportunity for free movement for work purposes across EU member countries (64.7 %). Regardless of the nursing shortage in all EU member countries we cannot expect that high numbers of nurses will leave the Czech Republic to work abroad. An important prerequisite for employment abroad is the appropriate knowledge of the foreign language but only a small percentage of nurses rate their language competence to be good. On the whole, the nurses expect that working abroad will bring them higher financial reward than they have in the Czech Republic at present.

Czech description

Vstup České republiky do Evropské unie (EU) bývá spojován s řadou očekávání i u zdravotních sester. V rámci šetření jsme zjišťovali, jaké zásadní změny v charakteru své práce očekávají. Tyto změny zdravotní sestry spatřují především ve větších nárocích na své celoživotní vzdělávání (73,3% respondentů). Dále ve větší příležitosti volného pracovního pohybu po členských zemích EU (64,7%). I přes nedostatek zdravotních sester ve všech zemích EU nelze předpokládat, že by tyto odcházely z České republiky ve velkém počtu do jiných zemí v zahraničí. Jedním z podstatných a důležitých předpokladů zaměstnání v zahraničí je i samozřejmě odpovídající znalost cizího jazyka. Ale jen malé procento zdravotních sester hodnotí své jazykové znalosti jako dobré. Celkově zdravotní sestry očekávají od práce v zahraničí zcela jednoznačně lepší, vyšší finanční ohodnocení než je v současnosti v ČR.
