Hopfield revisited: Two-6th Power Tropospheric Zenith Delay Profiles for Correcting GNSS Data

  • Original language description

GNSS signals experience a delay when passing through the troposphere. This delay cannot be measured directly, models exist to estimate the delay. Models usually split the delay in a zenith hydrographic component and a -wet component, while mapping functions correct for signals coming from non-zenith angles. Meteorological parameters are required as input to the models. If no actual data is available at the user (receiver), use must be made of pre-prepared climatological tables. This mode of operation is called blind mode. A well-known model for estimating the refractivity is the Hopfield two-quartic tropospheric refractivity profile for correcting satellite data [1]. It is shown that mathematical integration of this model gives a two-5th power delay profile. Comparison with zenith hydrostatic and -wet delay profiles derived from a numerical weather model shows a better fit with two 6th power models. The performance of the 6th power hydrostatic and -wet model has been compared with the Saastamoinen hydrostatic model [2] and the pressure-power ratio wet model as proposed by Dousa and Elias [3]. The comparison has been carried out with the models in blind mode. It is shown that in this mode the 6th power models perform as good as the Saastamoinen and Dousa-Elias models.
