Semitubina yukonensis n. sp., first occurrence of this biogeographically distinctive Old World Realm gastropod genus in the Lower Devonian of the Western Hemisphere
Original language description
A new species, Semitubina yukonensis, is described from Pragian age strata of the Royal Creek area, Yukon Territory. Until now, this genus was known only from Pragian age strata of the Czech Republic (Konìprusy Limestone) and equivalent age beds inthe Carnic Alps (Austrian/Italian border region). The Upper Silurian species Semitubina sakoi Kase, 1986 from Japan, is considered here to belong to different new genus. The biogeographic occurrence of this Old World Realm taxon in Pragian strata of theYukon Territory, confirms the Old World Realm character previously recognized from published studies of brachiopods, trilobites, and other gastropods. The Lower Devonian gastropod fauna of the Western Cordillera of Canada belongs to a single biogeographic unit of provincial rank, named here the ?Western Canada Province.? It is distinct from coeval faunas of Nevada, the latter area showing closer ties during Pragian time with faunas of the Eastern Americas Realm.
