Isotope composition of sulfate oxygen in peat bog surface waters and pore waters
Original language description
Oxygen (O) and sulfur (S) isotope systematics in bog water sulfates were determined for six Sphagnum dominated wetlands located in the British Isles and the Czech Republic, Central Europe. Sulfate S-O isotope composition of bog pore waters at a depth of40 cm below surface differed from that of surface bog waters, indicating that dissimilatory bacterial sulfate reduction, the main isotope selective process for sulfate in peat, occurred in surface peat layers. Bacterial sulfate reduction resulted in esidual sulfate simultaneously enriched in the heavier isotopes 34S and 18O only in 30 to 60 % of observations. Two other proceses were identified in the peat: Hydrolysis of low-34S ester sulfate upon depletion of the free sulfate pool, and
