Sphagnum peat accumulated since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution (ca. 1800 AD) was studied in eight 210Pb-dated vertical profiles through blanket bogs located in montainous regions of Czech Republic. The mean measured 206Pb/207Pb ratios of local ores, coal and gasoline were 1.16, 1.19 and 1.11, respectively. The production of Ag-Pb, coal and leaded gasoline peaked in 1900, 1980 and 1980, respectively. A sharp peak in Pb deposition (usually around 1980) falls into the middle of a smooth teady shift to less radiogenic Pb upward. It is an unlikely combination, since after the maximum Pb input is reached, the Pb isotope signature of the dominant pollution source should also retreat.
