    Mining Remote Sensing and its role in implementation of Czech and EU Directives - a case study for Sokolov open pit mine

    Common rock-forming minerals exhibit wavelength-dependent spectral features throughout the VNIR, SWIR and TIR wavelength ranges of the spectral region. In the case of open-pit mine areas, degradation processes (represented by formation of secondary minerals, iron oxides and oxyhydroxide formation, acidification and immobilization of heavy metals) can be detected and defined by Earth Observation (EO) data that measure surface spectral property in the VNIR/SWIR/TIR regions at a regional scale. Proper exploitation of these data can be used in sustainable information systems, which can make an interface for implementing the Czech Directives dealing with mining waste and water management (Directives: 2006/21/EC a 2006/118/EC a 2006/232/COM), furthermore a collaboration with representatives of JRC, Ispra, offer active integration and interfacing with EC services concerned with the implementation of the Directive addressing the Management of Waste from Extractive industries.
