'Non European' paleomagnetic directions from the Carpathian Foredeep at the southern margin of the European plate
Original language description
A paleomagnetic study carried out on 33 geographically distributed localities in the Miocene fill of the nearly 600 km long Moravian and Polish segments of the Carpathian Foredeep revealed an overall, more that 20° CCW rotation of the area. The new paleomagnetic results can be best interpreted in terms of CCW rotation, starting around 17Ma and probably continuing even today. The rotations must have affected not only the sedimentary fill of the Carpathian Foredeep, but also the basement, due to the dextral shift on the NW-SE trending block-bounding faults, observed in the basement as well as in the Miocene sediments. The present evidence for ?non European? paleomagnetic directions north of the Alpine-Carpathian mountain chain together with the previously published indications seriously question the rigidity of the European plate during the last 20Ma, at least near the thrust front of the Alps and Carpathians.
