Paleostress analysis of a gigantic gravitational mass movement in active tectonic setting: The Qoshadagh slope failure, Ahar, NW Iran

  • Original language description

A gigantic gravitational slope failure at Mount Qoshadagh in NW Iran represents a very deep-seated gravitational slope deformation with relatively short displacement, roto-translational base and an estimated volume of about 83?110 km3 displaced during the last glacial age. The Qoshadagh Fault System (also South Ahar Fault) caused fast uplift of the entire mountain range of Qoshadagh and probably seismically triggered the slope failure. The paleostress analysis has been proved as a useful tool for reconstructing the stress field evolution of large slope failures.
