Mercury in soil profiles from metal mining and smelting areas in Zambia and Namibia: distribution and potential sources

  • Original language description

Mining and non-ferrous metal smelting operations are responsible for significant soil pollution. Whereas mercury (Hg) is extensively studied in areas of gold mining (including artisanal mining), it is often overlooked as a minor contaminant in districts, where industrial base-metal smelting is in operation. This study is focused on Hg distribution in 21 soil profiles (168 soil samples) from metal-smelting areas in the Zambian Copperbelt and northern Namibia. Maximum Hg concentrations of 4.39 mg/kg weredetermined near the Tsumeb copper smelter (Namibia), whereas Hg concentrations were significantly lower in the Zambian Copperbelt (up to 0.392 mg/kg).
