The Kapanboğazı formation: a key unit for understanding Late Cretaceous evolution of the Pontides, N Turkey
Original language description
Based on nannofossil, dinoflagellate,Foraminifera and Radiolaria data the Kapanbogazi Formation was described - the Cenomanian–Turonian unit in the Sinop Basin, Sakarya Zone, Pontides, represented by red calcareous/siliceous pelagic shales, limestones and cherts passing gradually from the Albian black shales. These sediments possibly represent the deepest depositional conditions of the basin during the Cenomanian–Turonian interval and also reflect the transition from an anoxic to an oxic palaeoenvironmental setting. Detailed palaeontological data are presented and their importance to the interpretation of depositional history and tectonics of the Black Sea region discussed,as well as climatic and eustatic implications.
