Ordovician magmatism in the Lévézou massif (French Massif Central): tectonic and geodynamic implications

  • Original language description

New U–Pb dating on zircon yielded ca. 470 Maages for the granitoids from the Lévézou massif in thesouthern French Massif Central. These new ages do notsupport the previous interpretation of these granitoids assyn-tectonic intrusions emplaced during the Late Devonian-Early Carboniferous thrusting. The geochemical andisotopic nature of this magmatism is linked to a major magmaticOrdovician event recorded throughout the EuropeanVariscan belt and related to extreme thinning of continentalmargins during a rifting event or a back-arc extension. Thecomparable isotopic signatures of these granitoids on eachside of the eclogite-bearing leptyno-amphibolitic complexin the Lévézou massif, together with the fact that they wereemplaced at the same time, strongly suggest that thesegranitoids were originally part of a single unit, tectonicallyduplicated by either isoclinal folding or thrusting duringthe Variscan tectonics.
