Impacts of the ore mining and processing on the environment in the Berg Aukas area, Namibia
Original language description
As revealed by environmental-geochemical mapping, soils and agricultural products are affected to various degrees by industrial pollution in the area of the former Berg Aukas Pb–Zn–V mine. The most important sources of contamination are airborne particles from slag and tailing deposits. The degree of regional industrial pollution of soils can be best evaluated using the Coefficient of the Industrial Pollution (CIP, which is expressed as a sum of the concentrations of As, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in topsoil at the individual sampling points, divided by the median values of the same metals in topsoils of the studied region. Crops grown at the local National Youth Service Cooperative Farm contain high concentrations of potentially toxic elements(PHEs)that are deleterious to health. The analysed cassava and sweet potato leaves as well as sweet potato tubers are characterized by As, Pb and Zn values in excess of WHO limits for food. Based on this study, measures to reduce environmental risks in the Berg Aukas area are suggested.
