    Experimental Aspects of Platinum-Group Minerals

  • Original language description

This Chapter consolidates the experimental methods that can be applied for the synthesis of platinum-group compounds and minerals. Dry synthesis and principal experimental methods aiming to obtain single crystals are summarized. Crystal growth examples and syntheses conditions for selected platinum-group element bearing phases and minerals are shown and discussed. An updated list of platinum-group minerals (PGM) since the revision of Cabri (2002) is presented. There are 132 recognized PGM until now. PGM with revised crystal structure are also listed. We provide an overview on 23 PGM described since 2002 and discuss their experimental aspects. We summarize the ternary PGM and corresponding systems, and refer the data available on phase diagrams in the literature. This chapter encourages the implications of experimental studies in application for better understanding of PGM, their formation and occurrences at natural conditions.
