The impact of wetland on neutral mine drainage from mining wastes at Luanshya in the Zambian Copperbelt in the framework of climate change

  • Original language description

Neutral mine drainage from Cu-Co mine talings in the Copperbelt, northern Zambia has been investigated. Contaminants are attenuated in natural wetland and by adsorption and co-precipitation with ferric minerals downstream. There is rebound of sulfate and dissolved metals caused by inflow from mine tailings into the stream. Concentrations in dry period are probably much higher due to evaporation. In future, on-going climate change may result in higher dissolved and sediment concentrations.
