    2.2. Sources of radiation

  • Original language description

Natural radioactivity comes from extraterrestrial sources, aswell as from radioactive elements in the Earth’s crust.About 340 nuclides have been found in nature, of which about70 are radioactive. All elements with atomic number above 80have radioactive isotopes (Eisenbud, 1997).First, there is radiation that comes from space, called cosmicor cosmogenic. This type of radiation gives rise to the externalradiation dose and depends on altitude and location. Second, there is radiation caused by natural radionuclides, mainly in theEarth’s crust.
