1st Workshop Georgia 2021 - Engineering geology and remote sensing for catastrophic debris flow evaluation in high mountain area

  • Original language description

The workshop was organized within the project 'Methodology for the area assessment in terms of debris flow hazard using innovative technology'funded by the Czech-UNDP Partnership for SDGs – Challenge Fund - the Czech Solution for SDGs Ref. UNDPIRH-202005-CFP04-CZECH INNOVATION CHALLENGE. 2-day intensive workshop at the NEA headquarters in Tbilisi took place with the participation of Georgian specialists. The workshop was divided into two sections. The first one was led by engineering geologists with deep knowledge of geological hazard assessment. The second part was led by remote sensing specialists was focused on the FLOW2020 interactive tool and data pre-processing in QGIS (open source GIS software). Topics of workshops prepared by the Czech part were: Catastrophic debris flow in mountainous areas - Jan Novotný, Historical debris flow events in Kazbegi area, and evaluation - Martin Dostalík, Preparation of software, download of the elevation data and QGIS introduction workshop – Lucie Koucká, Jan Jelének, Digital Elevation Model and its derivatives workshop – Jan Jelének, Work with the newly developed software tool FLOW2020 – Lucie Koucká. On behalf of the NEA organization the workshop was attended by George Gaprindashvili - Head of Disaster Processes, E-G Division of NEA; Otar Kurtsikidze - Head of Division, Dept. of Geology, Geo-ecological complication of NEA. These partners are responsible for the knowledge transfer within NEA. The Workshop was also attended by: Merab Gaprindashvili - Head of Department of Geology, Zurab Rikadze - Leading Specialist of Department of Geology, Ramaz Koberidze – Senior Specialist of Department of Geology, Bakur Jinoria - Specialist of Department of Geology. The workshop was evaluated very positively and brought many interactions and interesting suggestions. A previously purchased laptop with the FLOW2020 program was handed over at the workshop. The training was conducted using the Kazbegi model area step by step to let the participants learn the methodology. The aim was to enable the participants to replicate this procedure in another territory. To help with that, a detailed manual was compiled and handed over to participants. The field part of our work followed shortly after workshops. The transfer of know-how in the field lessons was focused on the debris flow hazard in alpine terrain and glaciers activity. The topics of field training included: geomorphological mapping (Novotný, Dostalík), training in morphostructural mapping of source, transport and accumulation areas of debris flows (Dostalík, Novotný), Remote sensing in relation to debris flow hazard identification (Jelének, Koucká).
