International Expert Workshop on EGS & BTES project in Litoměřice

  • Original language description

The project of deep geothermal energy use in Litoměřice was initiated in 2006-7 by drilling a pilot PVGT-LT1 borehole to a depth of 2,111 m.This exploration drilling confirmed the anticipated temperature at target depth (64 °C). However, granitic rocks, which were anticipated at the sampled depths, were not reached. In 2013, the project was revived as a joint research project between top Czech universities, Academy of Sciences and the Czech Geological Survey (9 partners are involved in total). This cooperation resulted in the foundation of a unique research infrastructure, RINGEN (Research INfrastructure for Geothermal ENergy), developed in 2014-2020. RINGEN is located in Litoměřice at the pilot borehole drill site and it is hosted by the Faculty The project of deep geothermal energy use in the locality Litoměřice was initiated in 2006-7 by the implementation of exploratory drilling borehole PVGT-LT1 to a depth of 2,111 m.Since its commencement, the project has been developed and extended by new research topics such as shallow underground thermal energy storages and integration of other renewable resources (photovoltaics, green hydrogen, cogeneration, energy system services) using rock massif as a source and storage of energy at the same time.In 2021, the project entered a new phase when selected as one of the strategic projects within the framework of the financial programme Just transition fund for the Czech Republic – Ústí Region. A sum of max. € mil has been dedicated to developing an experimental integrated energy system combining innovative approaches aiming at energy transition and low carbon economy of the region. To prepare, develop and implement this project successfully, and reflecting state-of-the-art in the geothermal domain, a strong international expertise is needed to support the Czech scientific and technical team. For this purpose, an initial expert meeting in Litoměřice is suggested to discuss the overall project framework and potential technical solutions both for the deep (EGS) and shallow (UTES-BTES) technologies.
