Geological map of the Trans-Altai Gobi 1 : 500 000

  • Original language description

2nd updated issue. The Trans-Altai Gobi is formed by Palaeozoic volcano-sedimentary and magmatic complexes locally covered by Mesozoic and Cenozoic sediments. Three main Palaeozoic geological domains have been described in the Trans-Altai Gobi. These are, from north to south: Trans-Altai, composed of the Edren and Baaran terranes; Shargyn Gobi, formed by the Zoolen and Baytag terranes; and Gobi Tien Shan, containing the Tumurt and Ekhin Gol terranes. Generally speaking, the Trans-Altai Domain is composed of Devonian island-arc basalts, Devonian to Carboniferous volcanic rocks, and siliciclastic to volcaniclastic sediments. The Shargyn Gobi Domain is composed of early Palaeozoic deep-water sediments, ophiolite remnants, and early Carboniferous siliciclastic turbidites covered by late Carboniferous to Permian volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks. The Gobi Tien Shan Domain has the characteristics of a backarc/forearc basin with Ordovician to Carboniferous volcanic rocks, as well as siliciclastic and volcaniclastic sediments and metamorphic rocks of unknown age. All these units were accreted together duringthe late Palaezoic as part of the Mongolian collage of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt. This process was accompanied by enormous magmatic activity, evident in the numerous granitic plutons and volcanic rocks of Carboniferous to Permian age. Youngest geological development is related to movements on the recently active Gobi Tien Shan fault, which is one of the world's major intracontinental strike-slip faults.
