Paleogeographical and Paleo-Geodynamic Context of the Variscan Belt

  • Original language description

Providing the paleogeographical and paleo-geodynamic context of the Variscan belt involves identifying the Paleozoic lithospheric plates, that is, the principal ?contributors? involved in forming this orogen and restoring the paleopositions of continents and oceans during this geological period. Strictly speaking, the only method to restore the paleopositions of continents is paleomagnetism. From a paleo-geodynamic point of view, litho-tectonic zonation on the scale of the European Variscan belt must also account for the occurrence in the Bohemian Massif, the Black Forest, Vosges, as in the French Massif Central, of magmatic arc systems. Major advances in terms of the precision of paleogeographic reconstructions were obtained by comparing all paleontological, paleo-climatological and mineralogical constraints with paleomagnetic data. Fossil magnetic field recording is indeed the most rigorous method for reproducing the movements and rotations of large continental domains.
