Animation Bažina - geological development
Original language description
It may come as a surprise, but new volcanoes can be still found in Central Europe. This is true namely for maar volcanoes, those do not form significant topography. Couple of such maar volcanoes has been recently discovered in western Bohemia, near to village Polná. The activity of the first crater, known as Ztracený rybník, terminated with maar-forming explosion. The second crater, known as Bažina experienced more complex evolution. After the maar-forming explosion, the new batches of ascending magma created three superimposed small pyroclastic cones. This spectacular evolution of a small complex volcano was revealed by a combination of geophysical methods and drilling carried out as part of the international ICDP program.
