Animation Kaiserstuhl - geological development
Original language description
Kaiserstuhl is a small mountain-range in southwest Germany, representing erosional remnant of ancient volcano. Presence of carbonatites (magmatic carbonate rocks) makes this volcano very interesting. Part of the volcano collapsed during the evolution, producing set of debris avalanches and lahars. At the same time, the collapse has exposed carbonatites in the volcano's interior, lleading to their explosive eruptions and deposition of carbonatite pyroclastic deposits on the surface of lahar fan. Kaiserstuhl provides an alternative model, how carbonatite eruptions may be triggered.
