Jiří Kříž (March 31, 1943 - March 23, 2024), a major personality in the studies of Lower Palaeozoic rocks of the Barrandian area and Palaeozoic bivalves, passed away shortly before his 81st birthday. He was a world-renowned palaeontologist and stratigrapher, and also a leading Czech nature conservationist. This paper describes his life and scientific contibution to the community.
