Influence of sulfur nutrition on sugar beet resistance to aphids
Original language description
Effects of sulfur nutrition in combination with nitrogen, on sugar beet (Beta vulgaris) growth and infestation with Aphis fabae were studied in constant conditions on soil taken up from sugar beet growth region, well supplied with nutrients. Sulfur in the form of sodium sulfate in different combinations with nitrogen (ammonium nitrate) were mixed into the soil before sowing. Aphids pre-cultivated on Vicia faba were transferred on 3-weeks old sugar beet plants. Both nutrients applied separately stimulated plant growth but their effect was highly increased when applied simultaneously. The reproduction of aphids was higher on fertilized variants. However, after the conversion of the amount of aphids per unit of produced leaf matter, the infestation on allvariants supplied with sulfur significantly decreased.
