The review focuses on recent progress in the breeding of small grain cereals (barley, wheat, oats) for resistance to barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV). First, the symptomatology of barley yellow dwarf disease is described and the genome of BYDV, its serotypes and mechanisms of its replication in host plants are characterised. High attention is paid to the description of resistance genes and sources of BYDV resistance that are used in breeding of barley, wheat and oats. An example of recent programme aimed at pyramiding of resistance genes is registration of Italian feeding barley Doria, carrying resistance genes Ryd2, rym4 and Rdg1. The release of this cultivar resulted from the cooperation between EICR, Fiorenzuola d´Arda and CRI. Experiments employingtransgenic techniques in the construction of resistant plants are mentioned. Czech description
Review se zaměřuje na současné trendy ve šlechtění vybraných obilovin (ječmen, pšenice, oves) na rezistenci k viru žluté zakrslosti ječmene (BYDV). Nejprve je pospána symptomatologie BYDV a je charakterizován genom BYDV, jeho sérotypy a mechanismy replikace v hostitelských rostlinách. Hlavním tématem review je popis zdrojů rezistence a genů podmiňujících rezistenci k BYDV, které jsou používány ve šlechtění ječmene, pšenice a ovsa. Jako příklad úspěšného výsledky šlechtitelského programu zaměřeného na pyramiding genů rezistence Ryd2, rym4 a Rdg1 je uvedena italská odrůda krmného ječmene Doria, která byla vyšlechtěna na základě spolupráce VÚRV, v.v.i., a EICR, Fiorenzuola d´Arda. V review jsou rovněž zmíněny přístupy založené na transgenozi. Závěrem jsouporovnány výhody a nevýhody jednotlivých přístupů a nastíněny nové možnosti ve šlechtění výše zmíněných obilovin na rezistenci k BYDV.
