Original language description
The conference aimed to present modern methods for assessment of microorganisms in agroecosystems and microbial activity in soil and water. Molecular methods, such as microarray, T-RFLP, DGGE etc. and their use to address changes in soil quality, soil water retention and the impact of climate change were presented. Furthermore, a holistic approach to assess sustainability of land use using parameters such as irreversible losses of matter, i.e. the flow of matter from agricultural catchments to the sea,and dissipation of solar energy through short-circuited water cycle, was presented. The need to recycle water and matter was stressed and the activity of vegetation and microorganisms in water and matter recycling emphasised.
