Resistance to Fusarium head blight in spring barley
Original language description
Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a fungal disease causing substantial yield and quality losses also in barley. Genetic variation for deoxynivalenol (DON) content and the important FHB traits was studied in 44 spring barley cultivars for two years followingartificial infection with Fusarium culmorum in field conditions. Year conditions highly affected content of DON, expression of symptoms and reduction of yield traits, but all these traits were significantly interrelated. The most resistant cultivars Murasski mochi, Nordic, Krasnodarskij 35, Krasnodarskij 95, Nordus, and Usurijskij 8 showed low values for content of DON content in connection with relatively low expression of symptoms and low reduction of yield traits (thousand grain weight and grain weight per spike), while the resistant check Chevron could especially be classified as a low DON producer. Most spring barley cultivars registered lately in the Czech Republic expressed a susceptible reaction or medium response.
