The use of European grasslands by ruminant livestock
Original language description
Permanent grasslands (PG) are a valuable landscape component in most European countries. The proportion of total grassland on the total area of agricultural land (AL) in the EU in 2009 reached on average approx. 35.4 % (39.2 % in EU-15 and 26.0 % in EU-12). PG preservation and conservation in natural and cultural conditions is one of the priorities of the EU common agricultural policy (CAP). Ruminant production is the most convenient method from the viewpoint of ecology and economy. Due to the influenceof various factors, the numbers of cattle, sheep and goats per unit of AL and PG area differ significantly in old and new member states.
