New Possibilities of Using the Antifeedant and Repellent Effects of Plant Extracts in the Protection of Plants and Human Health
Original language description
Botanical insecticides (BI) play a significant role not only in plant protection against pests, but also in the protection of humans and domestic animals against significant vectors or against troubling insects. Besides substances causing acute or chronic insect toxicity, a large group of compounds can be found in the plant kingdom, which is classified as allomones, thus substances exerting repellent, antiovipositional and antifeeding effects. The effects of some of these substances are so good that they can be used for the development of new BIs safe for the environment and for the health. This chapter provides a critical summary of the most recent knowledge on plant allomones and their possible use in plant and human protection against pests and important vectors.
