Soil organic matter - climate change - carbon sequestration? The importance of long-term field experiments
Original language description
The long-term field experiments are an essential basis of agricultural and environmental research, they represent worldwide a broad spectrum of different soil and climate conditions and of agricultural land use. Currently, there are erroneously interpreted two serious topics: 1. It is claimed that climate change is causing a loss of humus. 2. It is claimed that he CO2 concentration of the atmosphere can be reduced by the storage of carbon in the soil. Based on evaluation of data from European long-term field experiments the following statements can be made: 1. There has been no scientifically based evidence that climate change has the effect of reducing the humus content of arable soils, on the contrary. 2. The possibility to decrease meaningfully the CO2 content in atmosphere by "carbon sequestration" to agricultural soil is excluded.
