Preliminary report on controlled nitrogen atmosphere in metal silo bin in the Czech Republic

  • Original language description

Modified anoxic atmospheres - including nitrogen atmosphere – belong among the most promising non-toxic alternatives for control of stored-product insects and mites in many types of dry stored-products. This study brings the first preliminary report on the usage of nitrogen anoxic atmosphere in silo bin in the Czech Republic. The trials were conducted in a metal silo containing 25 tons of legume seeds and controlled atmosphere of 1 % O2 and 99 % N2. Three trials were carried at different exposure times and similar temperatures: 1 day exposure (16.5 – 20.3 °C), 7 day exposure (17.5 – 23.6 °C) and 10 day exposure (15.9 – 23.9 °C). Since no legume-infesting pests were available at the date of the experiment, six model species of stored-product pests were used instead. Ten specimens of each species (enclosed in plastic Petri dishes with mash lid) were placed at the bottom and top area of the silo. Three replications were used for each trial and species. Ten days of exposure lead to 100% mortality of all adults located at the bottom and top of the silo. Seven days of exposure lead, with one exception, to 100% mortality of all adults located at both silo locations. The only exception was represented by the partial survival of Sitophilus granarius adults (96.7% mortality) at the silo-bottom. One day exposure resulted in great data variation: mortality ranged from 0% to 100% depending on species and silo location. The average pest mortality was higher at the silo-top (82.5%) than at the silo-bottom (16.3%). The complete mortality was reached for Tribolium castaneum, T. confusum and Oryzaephilus surinamensis in Petri dishes located at the silo top while zero mortality was reached for Tribolium castaneum in Petri dishes located at the silo bottom. Out of the tested pests Cryptolestes ferrugineus was the most tolerant species to nitrogen atmosphere; for this pest it was recoreded17% mortality at the silo-top; and 6.7% mortality at the silo-bottom.
