The content of phosphorus in the soil in the Czech Republic
Original language description
Phosphorus (P) is one of the three nutrients generally added to soil as fertilizer. The beneficial effect of phosphorus on crop yields has been known for well over a century. Nevertheless, when phosphorus enters surface waters in substantial amounts it becomes a pollutant, contributing to the excessive growth of algae, thus, to the accelerated eutrophication of lakes and reservoirs. Simply eliminating phosphorus additions might bring marginal lands into production, increasing the amount of erosion on such lands. Practices to reduce phosphorus loadings must be based on an understanding of phosphorus sources, forms of phosphorus added to soils and the availability of phosphorus in soils. Presently in the Czech Republic there are no problems with an excess of the content of phosphorus in soils, on the contrary, in some parts of the Czech Republic its lack is detected. Long term system of agrochemical soil testing in the Czech Republic is running since 1960s. Extraction procedure Mehlich 3 is the official analytical method currently used for the determination of the content of available phosphorus. It turned out that the determination of phosphorus by Mehlich 3 in soils having a pH above 7.2 is not completely accurate. Based on the results obtained by the Mehlich 3 method on the content of phosphorus in the soil, maps of the content of phosphorus in the soil were compiled in the Czech Republic.
