Comparison of nitrate uptake and utilization in Triticum aestivum L. and Triticum dicoccum Schrank

  • Original language description

The aim of this work was to find out the differences in nitrate uptake and utilization by comparing the Vmax and Km uptake parameters characterizing the high-affinity uptake system in six modern spring cultivars of bread wheat and two cultivars of emmer wheat. The nutrient solution contained 300 µM N as nitrate. At the age of three weeks the net rate of nitrate uptake was measured in depletion experiments and it was expressed as mol. g-1 FW. h-1. Assessment of cultivars differences in terms of ability to absorb nutrients from the environment by determining the kinetic parameters of uptake systems could be used as a criterion in the selection and evaluation of breeding material. This applies provided that plants grown under precisely defined conditions are compared with each other. A suitable genetic source would be cultivars or species with lower Km, higher Vmax and higher R/S ratio.
