Miscanthus Origin and Botanical Characteristics
Original language description
The chapter comprises knowledge on Miscanthus botanical characteristics. Miscanthus species (spp.), or silvergrasses, are semi-woody, perennial, rhizomatous grass species native to Asia (Southern Kurils, China-Manchuria, Taiwan, Korea), Polynesia, and Africa. It is botanically classified into the class of monocotyledons (Monoxyledonae), family Poaceae and tribe Andropogoneae. Horticultural organizations account for estimating with 14-20 Miscanthus species that are extended from temperate Siberian to tropical Polynesian regions in the world. In practice, the Chinese silvergrass (Miscanthus sinensis Anderss.) is the most widely used as an ornamental plant and is the source of several varieties. For agricultural cultivation, mainly as an energy crop, a hybrid of Miscanthus sacchariflorus (Maxim.) Hack. x Miscanthus sinensis Andersson, named due to its enormous tall as Miscanthus x giganteus Hodk. et Renvoize, has spread worldwide. This notion was helped by the fact that it is highly productive and, at the same time, sterile and therefore non-invasive hybrid crop.
