Worldwide cooperation of scientists in the project BRESOV : Genetic analysis of downy mildew resistance and identification of molecular markers linked to resistance in Brassica oleracea varieties

  • Original language description

Brassica oleracea L. is one of the most important species in the Brassicaceae family because the species include the most economically important vegetables in the world, including cauliflower, broccoli, cabbages, brussels sprout, kohlrabi, and kale. Currently, growers worldwide are bothered by a fungal disease caused by the Hyaloperenospora parasitica Pers.: Fr. (downy mildew), which attacks young seedlings and significantly reduces the yield and quality of agricultural crops. Using fungicides also failed to control downy mildew and has led to the evolution of more virulent pathogens. Resistant cultivars represent a desirable control method to provide a practical, environmentally benign and long-term means of limiting damage from this disease. Molecular marker technology is integrated into the existing plant breeding programs, the selected resistant genotypes according to molecular markers can be used for hybridization. Breeding for disease resistance is one of the primary objectives in most crop-breeding programs. The present study was undertaken to test molecular markers linked to the downy mildew resistance in cotyledon and adult plant Brassica oleracea varieties. According to Carlier et al. (2012) and Saha et al. (2020), 4 SSR markers were chosen (locus Pp 523 and Ppa 207) and tested on 200 Brassica oleracea varieties, inoculated by spraying with a conidial suspension of the Hyaloperenospora parasitica isolate. Preliminary results showed, that different parental lines and different environmental conditions during the year or specific reactions to the isolate may explain the difference in our results.
