    The Monk&apos;s rhubarb, Rumex alpinus L., is a perennial plant inhabiting nutrient-rich areas. It is native in the mountains of Central and Southern Europe. Still, its current distribution has been partly affected by its utilization as a vegetable and a medicinal herb in the past. In the mountains of the Czech Republic is an invasive plant, probably introduced into the Krkonoš Mountains by colonists from the Alps in the 16th century as a food plant. This study aimed to verify, using molecular markers, whether was Rumex alpinus introduced into the Krkonoše Mountains by alpine colonists or whether it naturally migrated from the Carpathians, where it is the native species. For the evaluation of the genetic structure, in total, 417 individuals from 31 populations of Rumex alpinus were collected from the Alps, Carpathians, Balkan, Pyrenees, and 4 Czech mountain areas, and 12 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers were applied. The results of AMOVA showed high 60 % variation within the population, 27 % variation among groups, and 13 % among the population within groups. The overall unbiased gene diversity was higher (̂ĥ = 0.435). A level of genetic differentiation among populations (FST = 0.35; p &lt; 0.01) indicated restricted gene flow between populations. In comparison with native populations, a limited gene flow between nonnative populations was observed. It was concluded that local adaptation, low gene exchange, and genetic drift affect the genetic diversity of Rumex alpinus. Low genetic variability in all Czech populations was found, consistent with the vegetative reproduction system of Rumex alpinus. The results proved a genetic link between Alpine and Czech genotypes of Rumex alpinus, while the Carpathians genotypes corresponded to the Balkan genotypes.
