Revitalization of Military Conflict-Affected Soils through Miscanthus-Based Advanced Phytotechnology with Waste-Derived Soil Amendments

  • Original language description

Military conflicts severely impact ecosystems, human health, and economies. In Ukraine, the Russian invasion since 2014 and full-scale war since 2022 caused over $56.4 billion in environmental damage, contaminating air, water, and soil; 40% of land is affected by mines and unexploded ordnance. Restoring these areas is critical for post-war recovery. The NATO SPS MYP G6094 project explores advanced Miscanthus × giganteus (M×g) phytotechnology for military-polluted soils, combining carbon sequestration, soil biological recovery, and biomass production for renewable energy and bioproducts. A closed-loop approach integrates waste-based amendments such as biochar, sewage sludge, and digestate.Four-year trials on post-military land in Chomutov (CZ) showed biochar (5–10%) and organic amendments significantly improved plant height, stem number, and biomass yield, with gains up to 49.7% (green harvest) and 28.6% (brown harvest). Soil health improved via enhanced microbial activity, nitrogen-fixing bacteria, and nematode community shifts favoring omnivores and predators.Since 2023, M×g phytotechnology has been tested in Vorzel, Ukraine, using biochar and biostimulants. Early results indicate improved plant health and positive soil biota recovery.Coupling M×g with biologically active, waste-derived amendments offers a scalable phytoremediation strategy for conflict-affected lands, producing hemicellulose biomass for building materials, pulp, and biochar. Future research will address long-term contaminant mobility and optimize amendment combinations for diverse degraded sites, supporting sustainable land recovery through phytoremediation, biomass valorization, and ecological restoration.
