5th Genebank Managers Network meeting

The Genebank Managers Network met on 20–21 May 2025 in Prague, hosted by the Czech Agrifood Research Center (CARC). After an introduction to the Czech Genebank and a visit to the genebank and cryobank facilities, the group discussed ways to strengthen collaboration within the Network (leadership, management, professional and policy dimensions). Presentations covered modernization of genebank operations (automation, robotics/3D printing and AI-based image analysis), public–private cooperation and its barriers, and initiatives promoting biodiversity through regional wild plant seed mixtures. Links with ECPGR Working Groups and updates from PRO-GRACE were discussed, including next steps towards a PGR research infrastructure (GRACE-RI) and questions on its added value and funding. Day 2 focused on management and operations: quality management measures, survey results across European genebanks, and positive experience with peer reviews, with consensus to continue peer-review cycles. “Network Hour” addressed SMTA/MTA use for distributing material for direct use, safety duplication (Svalbard as a second backup), EU PGRFA strategy and phytosanitary certification challenges. Dagmar Janovská was elected Chair for the next two years (Ana Maria Barata Vice-Chair); the next physical meeting is planned for 2026 in Poland (IHAR-PIB).
