Effect of various fertilisation and crop rotation on the yields, nitrogen uptake, soil quality and balance of C and N was investigated in four long-term experiments founded in 1955. Dry matter yields in the treatments without fertilisers were about 20 %higher in crop rotation with legumes. Legumes increased the accumulation of organic matter in soil and improved C balance by 17 % to 26 % and N balance by 62 x 102 kg N/ha. Legumes decreased N-losses by 36 x 40 kg N/ha.a.
