Constraints on thermal requirements for insect development
Original language description
Thermal constants of development, lower development threshold (LDT) and sum of effective temperatures (SET) vary among specie. In insects, LDT ans SET are negatively correlated and this functional relationship is probably a consequence of adaptation to thermal environments. Although LDT varies adaptively with geographic latitude, the corresponding change of SET was not established. I therefore investigated the role of body size, taxonomic position and food specialization as constraints on SET (and con sequently on development duration). There was a significant positive regression of SET on biomass acimulated during the development of larva or body mass of the pupa. In larvae, there were significant differences between groups of species with different trophic specialization. In Diptera, larval SET was shorter and pupal SET longer than in Coleoptera or Lepidoptera.
