Factors Influencing the Caecal Fermantation Patter in Rabbits
Original language description
The caecal fermentation pattern is linked to rabbit performance and health. In our laboratory we studied the following factors influencing significantly the rabbit caecal stoichiometry: a) animal age, b) substrate composition, c) presence of antimicrobials, d) substrate availability. Rabbits before weaning produced more propionate than butyrate, no methane and no caproate. In weaned rabbits, production of methane started at the age of 6Only ionophore coccidiostats, but not common feed antibiotics changed fermentation stoichiometry. In fasted rabbits, molar proportion of caecal acetate was higher and that of propionate and butyrate lower than in non-fasted rabbits. In general, caecal feFermentation of nitrogenous substances represents a supply of nutrients (NH3) and growth factors (isoacids) supporting optimal microbial growth. As rabbit caecal microflora is rather resistant to antimicrobials, the modification of feed composition remai
