Original language description
Variance components, heritabilities and breeding values were estimated for litter size in sheep by VCE4 (Groeneveld, 1998) and BLUPF-90 (Misztal, 1997). Performance control database (1993-2000) was obtained from State breeding Institute Bratislava. Onlypurebred Tsigai (C), Improved Valachian (ZV) and Merino (M) sheep were analysed. Heritabilities for litter size were low for all three breeds (0.020+0.004;0.008+0.002;0.018+0.005). Low level of heritability was expressed in narrow ran ge of breeding valueding values (in C from -0.15 lamb to +0.31 lamb and in ZV from -0.038 to +0.058 lamb). The average litter size in C was1.222+0.421; in ZV 1.190+0.395 and in M breed 1.260+0.442. Genetic gain for litter size was very lowin all breeds.
