Comparison of reproductive success in fallow deer males on lek and single temporary stands

Lek is a territorial mating strategy, which is widely spread amongst males in the fallow deer, Dama dama high-density population. A group of fallow deer was studied where males exhibit a mixed mating system with territorial (single temporary stands, leks) and non-territorial strategies during the rut. Reproductive success was estimated indirectly by counting females/minute held per male on both the lek and single temporary stands. In contrast to other reports, males on leks were accompanied with significantly less females compared to those on single temporary stands. The results suggest that under specific conditions (over-abundance of adult males compared to females) attracting females on the lek need not be the most effective one.

Porovnání reprodukčního úspěchu u samců daňka skvrnitého na leku a na samostatných dočasných stanovištích

Czech description

Lek je teritoriální reprodukční strategie, která je rozšířena u samců daňka (Dama dama) v prostředí vysoké populační hustoty. Byla sledována skupina daňků, kdy samci používali během říje různé reprodukční strategie ? teritoriální (dočasná samostatná stanoviště, leky) a neteritoriální. Reprodukční úspěch byl měřen nepřímou metodou ? počet samic v blízkosti samce za minutu sledování ? jak u leku, tak i u dočasných samostatných stanovišť. V rozporu s jinými údaji byli samci na leku doprovázeni průkazně menším počtem samic v porovnání se samci na dočasných stanovištích. Výsledky naznačují, že při určitých podmínkách (nadbytek dospělých samců v porovnání se samicemi) není zřejmě vábení samic na leku tou nejúčinnější taktikou.
