Economic weights of sperm quality traits for sire breed using the gene flow methods

  • Original language description

When breeding of pigs the increase of lean meat content has long been a goal of pig breeders, especially in sire breeds or lines. However, negative correlation between the meat production and sperm quality traits (SQTs) was found. Some authors reported that SQTs are heritable with genetic variation. Therefore, the objective of this study was to incorporate the SQTs into the comprehensive bio-economic model and to calculate the marginal economic values and economic weights for the new trait complexes in the Pietrain breed involved in the three-way crossing system of The Czech National Program for Pig Breeding. The numbers of discounted gene expressions of selected parents of each breed for all evaluated traits were summarized within all links of the crossbreeding system during the 8-year investment period using discounting with the half-year discount rates of 5%. Sperm volume, sperm concentration, progressive motion of spermatozoa in percent (motility) and percentage of abnormal spermatozoa were defined as the main characteristics for sperm quality. The bases assumptions when calculating the economic values of SQTs was that improving of SQTs lead to a higher number of sperm doses produced per boar ejaculate and decrease the costs per sperm dose and thus decrease the costs for insemination of sows. Number of sperm doses available from boar ejaculate was a function of boar age. From the total importance of the 18 traits in Pietrain breed the most important traits were health traits represented by survival rates of pigs in different rearing periods followed by feed efficiency and carcass traits. The relative economic weight of the four SQTs made 8%, therefore it is recommended to include SQTs into the breeding goal for sire breeds. The study was supported by project MZE-RO0719 V003 and QK1910217of the Czech Republic.
