Removal of confinement 3 days postpartum does not steadily increase exploratory behaviour nor reduce inactivity in domestic lactating sows
Original language description
Permanent crating exposes lactating sows to a very unchanging and inescapable environment, which may induce boredom. In farrowing pens with temporary crating, sows are only confined during the first days post-partum (pp). Removal of confinement and the associated increase in available space may contribute to better sow welfare compared to permanent crating by providing more freedom of movement. It may thus allow the expression of motivated behaviours such as exploratory behaviour and reduce inactivity.
