Has climate change impacts on cow health and production or does cattle influence climate change?

  • Original language description

The study is focused on climate change impact analysis on health, production, and reproduction indicators in cattle resulting in the proposal of effective measures to reduce the negative impact of climate change on the efficiency and profitability of cattle breeding. We obtained results from literature sources, especially from the author´s research project and practical experiences with farm audits. Directly climate change affects cattle thermoregulation, metabolism, immune system function, health, production, and reproduction indicators. Indirectly climate change affects feed and water supply. Livestock influence on climate is realized through a change of used land, feed production, animal production, manure, and processing and transport. Animals can adapt to climate change through physiological, biochemical, immunological, anatomical, and behavioral responses. Adaptation strategies involve genetic, physical, and feed modification, pest, and livestock management. Livestock, in a comprehensive view absorb more carbon than produce, helping to reduce the carbon footprint of other industries.
