Rank and Fluctuating Asymmetry in Antlers of Red and Fallow Deer
Original language description
Fluctuating asymmetry refers to small random differences between the left and right sides of bilateral characteristics. It has been suggested that symmetry in antler features is associated with dominance and is of potential use in assessment. This hypothesis is supported by one study comparing fallow deer antlers (Malyon & Healy 1994, Animal Behaviour, 48, 248-250.) We tested this hypothesis using data from published studies comparing rank position and antler growth in red and fallow deer.
