In this study we hypothesized that if adoption was simply a misfunction of maternal behaviour due to coincidental bonding with a non-filial calf, then hinds should adopt non-filial calves only within the first day post-partum (i.e. the sensitive period for bonding between mother and offspring in ungulates).
